In Ancient Greek mythology, the Rhodope Mountains are the birthplace of the legendary bard Orpheus, who enchanted animals, trees, and most importantly, vine-growers, with his magical music. In modern-day Bulgaria, Bessa Valley Winery adds to that legend, by producing a beautiful range of wines born from a mythical terroir. The winery was founded in 2001, by Count Stephan von Neipperg, an important Bordeaux oenologist. It is mostly French varietals that are grown here. The continental climate is moderated by the valley’s wind tunnel effect, allowing for the cultivation of a variety of delicious white wines, including Rhone Valley’s Roussane. The wine is a beautiful golden colour, bursting with complex floral aromas, apricots, and hints of caramel and butter. It was fermented and aged in new French oak barrels, giving it delightful tertiary flavours of nut and smoky wood. Made from 100% Roussane, it envelopes the mouth in classic Southern Rhone flavours, influenced by the continental Bulgarian climate. Look for elements of peach, pear and honey, all with a chalky minerality. Herbal hints appear on the long, smooth finish. This Roussane is an ideal pairing for creamy sauces, roast chicken, or spicy Asian dishes.
